OK, I want you to sharpen my skates, how do I get the process started?
1. Send us a e-mail at noicing@comcast.net and request a Skater Questionnaire Form. We can send it in Word or attach it in an email. If for some reason we don't respond in a timely manner, please email us again. We try to answer every day, but sometimes we are just so busy here in the store, or emails get filtered and don't make it through.
2. We will review your answers to the questionnaire, and work up a profile for you. The Profile will include the hollow, radius and pitch we think will work best for you. We will email you back with our recommendations. If you have questions please ask them by email instead of calling the store. The hockey season is in full swing and we are very busy sharpening local skates and to meet shipping deadlines for our internet customers. A five-minute phone call may mean that another customer doesn't get his blades shipped that day. Seriously, we generally don't have time to answer long phone calls, and rarely even answer the phone during working hours. Email is the best way because we can answer you during our short lulls, and will usually respond withing 15 minutes of getting your email. If you just have a shipping or billing question, you call Anita at the store, but she also likes to use email if you can. If you want a fast response, use email as sometimes we don't answer the phone for hours at a time, or even play voicemail till the end of workday. Thank you.
3. After we agree on what custom work is to be done, you must decide if you will be sending us your blades, or if you will be purchasing new blades. Pricing for sharpening and radius services can be found in the shopping area. If you want to know what something costs. place it in the shopping cart. You won't be charged until final checkout.
4. If you are sending us your blades and need help with removing them, it's easy. For Bauers, remove the footbed and remove the white plastic caps. You will see either a 5/32 allen nut or a 8mm nut inside the holders. Unscrew the nut and the blade will pull right out. All other brand skates have external hardware, just unscrew it and the blade pulls out. Email noicingtech@comcast.net if you have trouble.
5. The best way to ship your blades to us is in a Post Office Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope. Priority Mail is quick, usually 1-3 days anywhere in the country (US Only). Flat rate price is $4.95. You can fit up to 4 sets in one envelope. BE SURE TO TAPE YOUR BLADES TO THE INSIDE WALL OF THE ENVELOPE! If they can move around, they WILL cut their way through and we will get an empty envelope. I've even seen loose blades cut through cardboard boxes. Best way to ship them is to roll them in a Tyvek envelope, then tape that roll on a diagonal in the envelope with package tape (not Scotch tape or hockey tape. Please don't wrap blades themselves with tape, it's hard to get tape off the metal and it leaves a sticky residue. If you want to save money and are not in a hurry, you can ship your blades to us by regular Parcel Post. It's still fairly quick and usually less than $2. Lastly we sell a wide range of Skate and Hockey accessories that will fit in the flat-rate envelope with your blades, so there will be no additional shipping charges if you wanted to purchase one or two of them at the same time.
6. If you want to buy new blades from us, we will need the blade size to ensure a perfect match. NEVER use online guides that some website have, they are wrong. The only way to accurately get your blade size is to get it from your skates. On most skates the blade size can be found underneath the skate on the white plastic holder. Look for a 3-digit number embossed in the plastic next to the rivets, like 263, 280, etc. Let us know what that is. If you can't find it, send us a email and we'll help you out. Also, for Bauers we need to know if the holder is a Tuuk+, a Lightspeed, a Blue Lightspeed Power, or LS Power 2.1, all of these take different type steel. For Eastons, you'll just need the skate size, e.g, "8" for size 8 and 8.5 skates.
Keep in mind that the price of our blades includes the initial sharpening. You might be able to find steel cheaper elsewhere, but they do not come sharpened. So, if you plan to send us unsharpened steel, there will be a $10-20 fee to put on the initial sharpening. The initial sharpening is very different than a regular sharpening. New skates or replacement steel is just a flat rough cut slab. It takes approx 20-30 minutes minutes of labor to properly sharpen and establish the hollow and edges the first time the blade is sharpened. This labor is factored in to the price of our steel. If you send us unsharpened steel we have no choice but to charge you for our labor.
7. Once we've worked up your profile and have given you the specs, to order simply go to the secure 24hr Shopping Area in our site and order the runners that fit in your skates. Then order the type radius and/or sharpening, entering the specs we gave you in the drop down menus. Make sure if you are ordering steel you change quantity to 2 in the shopping cart so you get a pair. The price of runners does NOT include a Custom Radius, so you have to order that separately and place a radius in your shopping cart. You only need to order one radius, radius price is for a pair. Complete the order and check out. Double check that everything is correct. Whatever you select and order, we are going to do and we are going to ship them fast. So, don't screw up! Ensure that the shipping address is the same as the billing address on your credit card statement and that the CCV code you enter is correct. If either of these is wrong, your order will not be processed. If you want the package delivered to other than the billing address, like your workplace, we will only do this for customers who have a long track record of business with us. Because of credit card fraud, it is too risky for us to send items to non-billing addresses. We've been burnt too many times. We'll ship to any address if you want to pay us by PAYPAL but.. payment type must be "gift" and funds have to be from your PAYPAL balance or your confirmed bank acct through PAYPAL. We cannot take a PAYPAL payment that is based off a PAYPAL credit card. Of course if you send us cash, a money order, or bank check in advance we will gladly ship anywhere. We take Visa, MC and Discover. No personal checks please, unless you don't mind waiting 2 weeks for them to clear. Upon payment, we will complete the order and ship the blades that day or the following day by Priority Mail. We prefer to send all blades by Priority mail because this is the cheapest and fastest way. Coast to Coast in 3 days, and they deliver on Saturdays. Unlike other web sites, we do not make any money on shipping or have handling charges. If you want UPS overnite service, that option is available. For Fedex you have to fax or email us a label. Orders must be in by 4pm in order to be sent overnite. If you want to send us a prepaid shipping label, feel free to do so. Do not send stamped envelopes unless Delivery Confirmation is included. We rarely have a problem with Priority Mail losing a package, but if you want to get insurance, you must ask for it because we normally don't ship with it. Please, NO TELEPHONE ORDERS! We operate a retail store and are helping customers here virtually all day long. All orders MUST be placed through our website. If you have to ask a question before ordering, send an email, we usually answer them within 15 minutes.
8. We do not stock some sizes of replacement blades because there is not much demand for them. If you are looking for a pair we do not have, we suggest you find an online site or local hockey store that has them and have the blades shipped to us for sharpening and profiling. Except for CCM/Reebok, we do not sell single runners, only pairs. We can't buy them single from the manufacturers.
9. Any time you send blades to us, be sure your name is on the envelope or on a note inside. Better yet, after you order online, just print out the order form and enclose it in your envelope. We have many customers and get lots of steel each day in the mail. We can expedite your work if we know what you want done. We have all your settings on file, if you want something different or something that couldn't be selected in the shopping cart, just write details on your order form. If you moved or have a new credit card, you can enter that information when you complete your online checkout. Again, it is critical that your credit card information is correct and that the ship to address is the same as your credit card billing address. Look at your credit card statement, that's the address we have to ship to.
10. Many of our customers rotate two or more sets of blades, so they are never without a freshly sharpened set. This seems to work best for most skaters. Also, if you have teamates that use our service, why not send your blades together like many do and SAVE on postage. Just let us know who will be paying the postage.
